In an unforgettable outing filled with excitement, cheers, and plenty of smiles, Project Uplift Tampa Inc. recently took a group of middle school students from Plato Academy, a free charter school, to experience the thrill of a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game. For many of the kids, it was their first time attending a professional sporting event—and it was nothing short of electrifying!

The field trip was organized by Project Uplift Tampa Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of local youth through unique educational and recreational opportunities. At the heart of this initiative is John Johnson, a long-time community advocate and recipient of a prestigious Community Impact Award. A few years ago, John was recognized for his unwavering commitment to making a difference, and he continues to pay it forward by bringing a group of kids to Lightning games every season.

“There’s something magical about seeing the kids’ faces light up when they enter the arena,” John said. “For some of them, this is a brand-new experience. It’s about more than just hockey; it’s about inspiring them to dream big and showing them they’re part of a community that cares.”

The students arrived at the Amalie Arena in high spirits, sporting Lightning gear and ready to cheer for the home team. Project Uplift Tampa Inc. ensured every detail was covered, from arranging transportation to providing snacks for the group. The energy in the arena was contagious as the kids joined thousands of fans in rallying behind the team, waving their foam fingers and screaming, “Go Bolts!”

For the students of Plato Academy, this outing was more than just a fun evening. It served as an opportunity to learn about teamwork, perseverance, and the power of community support—values that Project Uplift Tampa Inc. works tirelessly to instill.

As the Lightning secured a hard-fought victory against the Detroit Red Wings that evening winning 5 to 1, and it was clear that everyone in attendance—especially the students—left feeling like winners. Thanks to Project Uplift Tampa Inc. and John’s steadfast leadership, these young fans experienced not just the joy of hockey but also the powerful impact of a community coming together to lift them up.

Here’s to many more unforgettable moments with Project Uplift Tampa Inc. and the Tampa Bay Lightning! Go Bolts! #tampabaylightning @tblightning #bolts
