PURE LA and The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo Los Angeles staff were happy to participate, offering interactive activities that highlighted Black cowboy culture in celebration of Black History Month. As part of the LAUSD Always Be Kind to Others Initiative, Chandler Elementary School hosted a Black History Month Assembly on Thursday, February 20th, bringing together over 500 K-5 students, parents, and teachers in Sherman Oaks, CA.
The event featured Margo Wade LaDrew, National Development & Partnerships Director of the BPIR, who shared the rich history and contributions of Black cowboys and cowgirls. Students also watched a BPIR Black History Month video and received the BPIR Foundation Kids Workbook for further learning.
Adding a hands-on experience, BPIR Cowboy Todd LaVergne introduced his pony, Shorty, as part of Project Uplift Ranch Equine LA (PURE LA), which provides Equine-Assisted Learning experiences. Michelle Johnson, PURE LA Program Director/BPIR PR Director, led interactive activities with donated RopeSmart Roping Dummies, immersing students in cowboy traditions.
Thank You to Wendy Wheaton and Chandler Elementary School Principal Matthew Skoll and staff for a Meaningful Black History Month Assembly.
